Meteorologists predict rain and snow fronts in store for Thanksgiving week

Multiple weather fronts are set to push rain and snow into the Midwest, Southeast, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast ahead of Thanksgiving week, impacting travel days. More than 25 million people were under winter storm warnings by late Sunday, with severe weather expected in Texas. A long-duration atmospheric river is forecasted to deliver significant rain and snow to Oregon and California early in the week.

Following the atmospheric river, waves of low pressure will spread out into the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast, bringing colder air and potential snow. An upper-level low pressure system is expected to develop over the Great Lakes and Northeast later in the week, leading to cooler temperatures, cold rain, and snow accumulation in some areas.

Looking ahead to Thanksgiving week, federal forecasters predict cooler temperatures, cold rain, and high-elevation snow on the East Coast. Despite the wintry weather, there are indications that holiday travel and shopping will see a post-pandemic increase, with American Airlines expecting a record number of passengers and the National Retail Foundation predicting a record number of in-person shoppers.

While the potential for rain and snow during the holiday week may impact travel and spending plans, the overall outlook remains uncertain at this time. The U.S. Climate Prediction Center’s six-to-ten-day forecast suggests above-average rain for certain states, but normal or below-normal precipitation for the rest of the country.
