Governor Tony Evers has called for additional audits of Milwaukee Public Schools, which Mayor Cavalier Johnson has supported. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is also backing these calls. Johnson emphasized the need for more community involvement in addressing the challenges facing MPS, including low voter turnout in school board elections.
Superintendent Keith Posley recently resigned amid ongoing financial problems at MPS, leading to the withholding of special education aid payment due to late financial reporting. Evers is calling for audits of both district operations and classroom instruction, in addition to financial audits, to address these issues.
The city of Milwaukee, including Mayor Johnson and the comptroller’s office, has offered support to select a new superintendent and provide financial management expertise. While the city does not intend to take over governing the school district, it stands ready to assist in addressing MPS’ significant needs.
Various officials, including Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, State Superintendent Jill Underly, and MPS Board of Directors, have expressed support for Governor Evers’ proposal to allocate state funds for audits of the district. They highlight the importance of accountability, transparency, and collaboration in finding solutions to the funding crisis at MPS.
