The University of Wisconsin has made a significant change to its football coaching staff by firing offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Phil Longo. The decision came following the Badgers’ 16-13 loss to No. 1 Oregon, dropping their record to 5-5 on the year. In a statement, head coach Luke Fickell explained that the team was not where they needed to be and that the decision to let Longo go was in the best interest of the team. Longo, known for bringing an Air Raid system to Wisconsin, was unable to significantly improve the team’s offensive performance, with the Badgers ranking ninth in the Big Ten in total offense.
Despite Longo’s innovative approach, the team struggled to score points consistently, failing to surpass 13 points in their last three games. The quarterback situation was also challenging, with injuries limiting their options. The Badgers are now one win away from securing a bowl game for the second consecutive year under Fickell, with upcoming games against Nebraska and Minnesota to close out the season. This decision to part ways with Longo reflects the team’s commitment to finding success in the remaining games and building a stronger program moving forward.
