Milwaukee Alderman Scott Spiker is demanding answers from the Milwaukee Board of School Directors regarding the current financial crisis facing Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). Spiker, who has no authority over the matter, stated that if the board does not act transparently, its members should resign. The crisis was sparked by MPS being months behind on required financial reporting to the state, resulting in the withholding of over $16 million in aid and the resignation of former Superintendent Keith Posley. Spiker criticized the lack of public commentary on Posley’s proposed 2025 budget and called for greater accountability from the board, echoing calls from other community members and officials for board members connected to the scandal to resign. State Rep. Bob Donovan also called for the board’s resignation, describing MPS as a “basket of lemons.” In response to the mounting pressure, the board released a statement reaffirming its commitment to the district’s students, families, and staff. Governor Tony Evers has proposed funding for operational and instructional audits of MPS, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in addressing the challenges facing the district. The community continues to express frustration and concerns over the state of MPS, with calls for action and collaboration to ensure every tool is provided for Milwaukee County students to succeed.
