Wisconsin Badgers Aim for Consistency Against UTRGV After Upset Win
MADISON, Wis. – Following a thrilling victory against the ninth-ranked Arizona Wildcats, the Wisconsin Badgers, currently undefeated at 4-0, are set to host the Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (3-2) in a non-conference match on Monday night. This encounter comes after Wisconsin triumphed over Arizona with a score of 103-88, propelled by John Tonje’s remarkable 41-point performance, a career high for the graduate transfer.
In the game against Arizona, Wisconsin showcased resilience, fighting back after the Wildcats tied the game at 65. Coach Greg Gard praised his team’s determination, noting the growth and toughness developing in the squad. Tonje, a 6-foot-5 guard, not only leads the Badgers in scoring with an average of 23.5 points per game but has also been efficient, shooting 55.8% from the field and recording an impressive 37 out of 39 from the free-throw line.
The Badgers, despite suffering a significant rebounding deficit to Arizona (52-28), made up for it with remarkable free-throw shooting, converting 41 out of 47 attempts. Other key contributors include Max Klesmit and John Blackwell, averaging 15.3 and 12.8 points, respectively.
On the other side, the Vaqueros arrive in Madison on a three-game winning streak after initially stumbling in their season opener against top-tier teams Nebraska and No. 14 Creighton. With K.T. Raimey leading UTRGV with an average of 15.0 points, the team, under first-year coach Kahil Fennell, seeks to further solidify its momentum.
