Wisconsin Congressional Districts Show Lack of Competitiveness Among Incumbents
In Wisconsin, most congressional districts are not competitive, leading to easy victories for U.S. House incumbents. Despite the state being closely contested in elections, with President-Elect Donald Trump winning by less than 1% in 2024, the political geography heavily favors Republicans.
The state’s left-leaning voters are concentrated in Madison and Milwaukee, while Democrats have struggled in rural areas, resulting in Republicans holding six of the eight congressional seats. The Democrats have a limited chance of winning only one more district.
The Badger Project created a graphic comparing the number of votes each congressional representative received in Wisconsin and their margin of victory over their challengers. The total votes received varied among the representatives, with the data presented in order of total votes rather than percentage.
The Badger Project, a nonpartisan journalism nonprofit in Wisconsin, produced the graphic to highlight the lack of competitiveness among incumbent U.S. House members in the state. This data sheds light on the political landscape of Wisconsin and the challenges that Democrats face in winning additional congressional seats in the future.
