Milwaukee Public Schools is facing scrutiny from Legislative Republicans who are calling for an audit of the district’s finances following a recent scandal. Gov. Tony Evers has also called for an operational audit to review processes and instructional policies. The state Department of Public Instruction found that MPS may have submitted incorrect financial data, leading to overpayment.
Amidst the crisis, superintendent Keith Posley resigned, and key financial team members were either fired or retired. Acting superintendent Eduardo Galvan is working to stabilize the district’s finances. He plans to fill vacant financial positions and focus on teaching students. The Board of School Directors will soon begin a search for a new superintendent.
Beyond the financial crisis, there are concerns about student performance. More than half of MPS students scored below basic levels in reading and math in the previous school year. State officials are calling for improvements to both finances and student outcomes.
Legislative Republicans are hopeful for bipartisan efforts to improve MPS, with a focus on accountability and student success. Despite differing opinions on how to address the district’s challenges, there is a consensus on the need for corrective action to benefit students.
