In the months leading up to the November election, a group of voters in Wisconsin and other states urged Vice President Kamala Harris to take a stronger stance against Israel’s war in Gaza. Despite pressure from voters, Harris remained aligned with the administration’s support of Israel and ultimately lost to Donald Trump in most states, including Wisconsin. The outcome has left members of Wisconsin’s movement, Listen to Wisconsin, grappling with the results and planning their next steps.
The election results have been difficult for some to accept, with many feeling uninspired by Harris’ middle-of-the-road approach to the conflict in Gaza. While Harris did promise to work towards a ceasefire and a two-state solution, her reluctance to make stronger statements on the situation may have cost her support among certain voters, including anti-genocide advocates. In Wisconsin, Harris lost to Trump by more than 29,000 votes, with some voters opting for third-party candidates or abstaining from voting altogether.
Despite the election outcome, members of the Listen to Wisconsin movement view the results as a lesson for the Democratic Party. Advocates hope that the disappointment will lead to a different approach to campaigning in future elections, with a focus on listening to the will of the people rather than special interests. The movement plans to continue their advocacy efforts beyond the election, building on the momentum created since the primary in April.
