Concern Grows for Missing Wisconsin Man Last Seen in Crystal Lake
Family and friends are rallying to locate Benjamin Oberto, a 45-year-old man from New Berlin, Wisconsin, who has been missing since Wednesday night. Oberto was last seen leaving the 1776 Restaurant in Crystal Lake just before 9 p.m. on October 18. His wife, Laura Leatherberry, made a heartfelt plea for information via Facebook, which has garnered over 5,000 shares.
Oberto, driving a silver 2019 Subaru Impreza, reportedly spoke with Leatherberry around 6 p.m., indicating he was heading home, a three-hour journey. However, security footage captured him leaving the restaurant and, approximately 30 minutes later, his car was recorded at the Elgin toll booth on Route 31 at 9:27 p.m. His cellphone was pinged around 9:47 p.m., showing its last location in the O’Hare and Rosemont area, which adds to the mystery as Leatherberry stated there was no known reason for him to be there.
Leatherberry filed a missing person’s report on Thursday morning after an anxious night. "I think they are doing the best they can,” she said, reflecting on the search efforts while acknowledging her own feelings of self-doubt.
She has extensively driven the potential routes between New Berlin and Crystal Lake, fearing her husband may have been in an accident. TSA confirmed that Oberto did not board a flight from O’Hare, and his car’s iPass records do not indicate it has traveled through any other toll booths.
Oberto’s vehicle is noted to have no tags or decals. Authorities urge anyone with information about him or his car to reach out to the New Berlin police at (262) 782-6640 or the Crystal Lake police at (815) 459-2020.
