Flags to be Lowered to Half-Staff This Weekend in Tribute to Former Wisconsin State Representative

Governor Evers Honors Late Wisconsin Lawmaker Fred Kessler with Flags at Half-Staff

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – In a heartfelt tribute, Governor Tony Evers has ordered flags to fly at half-staff on Saturday, November 16, in honor of former Wisconsin State Representative Fred Kessler, who passed away on November 12 at the age of 84. This decision is captured in Executive Order 243, which will be effective from sunrise until sunset on the designated day.

Governor Evers praised Kessler as a dedicated public servant and a staunch advocate for the Milwaukee community. "His legacy will live on through his countless accomplishments," Evers remarked, extending condolences to Kessler’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by his work.

Kessler’s political career began when he became the youngest person ever to serve in the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1960. He represented the 10th Milwaukee Assembly District from 1961 to 1963 and again from 1965 to 1972. Additionally, he served the 12th Assembly District from 2005 until 2019, accumulating a remarkable total of 12 terms in office.

Throughout his extensive legislative career, Kessler championed numerous causes, focusing on public education, civil liberties, fair housing, LGBTQ rights, personal privacy, freedom of speech, and redistricting reforms, significantly impacting the legislative landscape of Wisconsin.

Kessler, a proud alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the people he served. Services commemorating his life and contributions will take place on November 19 in Milwaukee.
