New Berlin Man Found Dead in Vehicle in Rosemont
The body of Benjamin Oberto, a 45-year-old man from New Berlin, Wisconsin, has been discovered inside his partially submerged vehicle in Rosemont, Illinois. Authorities located Oberto’s Subaru Impreza on Friday after it was found in a creek near the Interstate 90 eastbound ramp to northbound Interstate 294.
Investigators from the Illinois State Police have assumed control of the case but reported no immediate updates regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. Oberto had been reported missing after leaving the 1776 Restaurant in Crystal Lake around 9 p.m. Wednesday. His wife, Laura Leatherberry, indicated that he had called her earlier that evening, mentioning he was en route home, which should have taken approximately three hours.
Despite his estimated arrival time, Oberto did not reach home, prompting Leatherberry to file a missing person report the following morning. Surveillance footage confirmed he left the restaurant around the same time he spoke with his wife. Further investigation revealed that his vehicle’s iPass account recorded a transaction at the Elgin toll booth shortly after 9:27 p.m. Wednesday, but he never returned home.
Police tracking Oberto’s cell phone showed the last activity occurred at 9:47 p.m. in the Rosemont and O’Hare area, and records with the Transportation Security Administration confirmed he had not taken a flight out of O’Hare. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances leading to his tragic death.
