Wisconsin Women’s Soccer Proceeds to NCAA Tournament Second Round with Convincing Win Over Maine
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 5 ranked Wisconsin women’s soccer team showcased their dominance by defeating the Maine Black Bears 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Badgers wasted no time establishing their control, scoring two early goals that set the tone for the match.
Aryssa Mahrt opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, delivering a stunning start. Within the next two minutes, she assisted teammate Ashley Martinez, propelling Wisconsin to a quick 2-0 lead. The Badgers’ offensive pressure was evident as they dominated the statistics, leading in shots (7-0), shots on goal (6-0), and corners (5-3) in the first half.
As play resumed after halftime, the Badgers remained focused on increasing their lead. However, the Black Bears seized an opportunity, finding the back of the net in the 48th minute to reduce Wisconsin’s lead to 2-1. The Badgers quickly regrouped, and Erin Connolly struck in the 57th minute, restoring Wisconsin’s two-goal advantage at 3-1.
Throughout the match, Wisconsin maintained a significant statistical edge, finishing with 13 shots to Maine’s 3 and 12 shots on goal compared to the Black Bears’ 3. They also held a corner kick advantage of 13-4.
Looking ahead, the Badgers are set to travel for their next challenge against either No. 1 seed Southern California or No. 4 seed Virginia in the upcoming second round of the NCAA Tournament.
