Community Mourns Loss of College Student with Peanut Allergy
WATERTOWN, Wisconsin – The Watertown community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of 19-year-old Hannah Glass, a college student with a severe peanut allergy. Hannah passed away after consuming a brownie that, unbeknownst to her, contained roasted peanut flour, a potential trigger for her allergy.
The Calvary Baptist Church was filled to capacity on Wednesday as over 1,000 people gathered to pay their respects to Hannah, whose life ended far too soon. Her parents, Janean and David Glass, shared their heartbreak with WISN 12 News, reflecting on their daughter’s passion for serving the Lord. Hannah had recently begun her studies at Maranatha Baptist University, fulfilling her dream of pursuing higher education in her hometown.
Describing the events leading up to her tragic passing, David recalled that Hannah immediately recognized something was wrong after her second bite of the brownie, which had been brought to her by a friend from a women’s group on campus. Despite using her EpiPen and taking Benadryl, her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a collapsed lung. After an ambulance struggled to revive her, Hannah was transported to Froedtert Hospital but sadly passed away on Sunday.
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, the Glass family is urging others to remain vigilant about food allergies and to keep EpiPens up to date. “Always be aware,” Janean emphasized, reminding families of the importance of food safety.
Despite their grief, the Glass family has chosen to honor Hannah’s memory by donating her organs, positively impacting the lives of four recipients so far. Hannah’s legacy of love and service will live on through these acts of kindness.
