Madison Bergmann, a fifth-grade teacher in Wisconsin, has been on paid administrative leave since her May 1 arrest for allegedly engaging in inappropriate behavior with an 11-year-old student. Despite this, she has continued to collect her $51,000 salary. Another teacher, who may have known about Bergmann’s behavior but did not report it, has also been placed on leave. Both teachers offered their resignation, which was accepted by the school board in order to stop their salaries after their next paycheck.
Bergmann has been charged with first-degree child sexual assault, as she allegedly kissed the student multiple times and engaged in other inappropriate behavior. The illicit encounters were discovered when the boy’s parents found salacious texts on his phone. Bergmann’s fiancé has canceled their July wedding in light of the allegations.
The school district is working with law enforcement on the case and has vowed to seek justice. They will not provide a good job reference for Bergmann or the other teacher involved. Bergmann is currently free on a $25,000 bond and will appear in court on June 10. The district is conducting its own investigation into the situation to determine what actions should have been taken.
