The San Francisco Police Department has credited technology for helping reduce crime by 34% compared to last year. The department recently showcased their new Drone as First Responder (DFR) technology, which is making crime-fighting more efficient and helping with the department’s staffing shortages. Unlike other drones in use by the SFPD, the DFRs are stationed in a central location for quicker response times.
SFPD Chief Bill Scott called the DFR technology a “game changer,” with the ability to capture footage of crimes such as bike theft and provide evidence for convictions. Mayor London Breed emphasized the impact of the technology on improving quality of life for residents and reducing crime.
The DFR technology is not entirely new, as Fremont police and fire departments have been using similar drones since 2022. The collaboration between agencies is seen as crucial in implementing effective crime-fighting strategies.
Six DFR units will be stationed across San Francisco to help alleviate the department’s staffing shortage and improve response times. The technology is expected to increase the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts and lead to more arrests for crimes such as sideshows.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan attended the press event to learn from SFPD’s use of DFR technology and explore the possibility of implementing it in his city. The collaboration between agencies and innovative technology are seen as key factors in successfully combating crime in the Bay Area.
