As autumn arrives, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to be alert for deer on the roads. With deer crash numbers typically increasing in October and November due to the peak mating season, it is important for motorists to stay vigilant and avoid distractions while driving.
According to Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan, this time of year is busy for both deer and motorists, making it crucial for drivers to be cautious. Deer are most active during the early morning and evening hours, so it is recommended to use headlights as daylight transitions to dusk to improve visibility.
In 2023, there were over 16,000 crashes involving deer in Wisconsin, resulting in 14 fatalities and 585 injuries. To stay safe, it is important to brake firmly and stay in your lane if you cannot avoid hitting a deer with your vehicle. Sudden swerving can lead to a loss of control and a more serious crash.
Motorcyclists are at a higher risk of injury in deer-related crashes, with 196 motorcycle crashes occurring last year, resulting in 11 fatalities and 53 serious injuries. As such, all drivers are urged to exercise caution and stay alert while on the roads during this time of year.
