State Senator from Kentucky Dies Weeks After Falling into Empty Swimming Pool While Mowing

Kentucky state Senator Johnnie Turner, known for his strong support of the coal industry and other causes in his Appalachian district, has passed away at the age of 76. Turner, a Harlan Republican, was beloved for his folksy manner and dedication to his constituents. He died after sustaining injuries in an accident at home where he fell into an empty swimming pool while on a lawn mower.

Throughout his career, Turner worked to uplift eastern Kentucky and pushed for legislation supporting the coal industry, despite its decline in recent years. He also supported measures that benefited the entire state, such as a horse racing bill that secured the legal status of historical racing machines, a significant revenue source for racetracks. Turner’s courage in supporting initiatives outside of his socially conservative district was praised by his colleagues.

Turner served in the Kentucky House before winning election to the Senate in 2020. His sudden death has left a vacancy in the upcoming election, with his name still set to appear on the ballot. The GOP-dominated legislature will convene in 2025, and a special election may be required to fill Turner’s seat until then. Colleagues and leaders across Kentucky have mourned Turner’s passing, remembering him as a dedicated public servant and advocate for eastern Kentucky.
