As the war in Ukraine rages on, the situation on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, saw significant developments. In the southern city of Kherson, at least six people were killed and three injured as Russian artillery targeted a market, while six more were injured at a bus stop. In Zaporizhia, one person was killed and 32 injured as residential buildings were hit by Russian aerial bombs.
Ukraine’s military successfully shot down 29 out of 32 Iranian-made drones in a Russian attack. Russian troops were reported to have reached the center of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region. Russia also captured two more villages in Donetsk and Kharkiv regions.
Ukraine observed a moment of silence on Defenders Day to remember those lost in the conflict. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported pervasive mistreatment and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russia, while also noting some mistreatment of Russian POWs by Ukraine. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General is investigating the killing of 16 Ukrainian POWs by Russian forces.
Russia detained 39 individuals, including nine teenagers, accusing them of supporting “Ukrainian terrorist” groups. Three journalists detained while covering an event marking the annexation of Ukrainian regions were released after being fined.
NATO’s new Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized Ukraine as his “top priority.” The situation in Ukraine remains dire as the war continues its 950th day.
