Natasha May, a health reporter for Guardian Australia, shared her long-standing love for pygmy hippos in a recent article. She expresses her joy at seeing millions of people around the world falling in love with these unique animals after viral videos of Moo Deng went viral. However, she has been admiring pygmy hippos for over 15 years.
May’s fascination with pygmy hippos began in 2008 when she saw a news segment about a baby pygmy hippo named Monifa at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. Despite knowing it was impossible, she jokingly begged her parents for a pygmy hippo. Her father responded by giving her a newspaper clipping of Monifa, acknowledging it was in lieu of the actual animal.
Years later, May had the opportunity to work with pygmy hippos during a work experience at Taronga Zoo. She describes the privilege of caring for Monifa, including rubbing her body and preparing her food. May’s birthday tradition of visiting the pygmy hippos at the zoo reflects her enduring devotion to these animals.
While the sudden popularity of pygmy hippos may be fleeting, May’s love for them remains steadfast. She hopes that others will continue to appreciate the magnificence of pygmy hippos even after the viral moment fades. May’s heartfelt connection with these animals is a touching reminder of the joy and wonder they bring to those who encounter them.
