Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, urging global leaders to support his 2022 peace formula demanding the expulsion of Russian forces from Ukraine and justice for war crimes. He criticized China and Brazil for promoting what he called “half-hearted settlement plans” that prioritize their interests over Ukraine’s.
Representatives of 20 UN states are set to discuss a peace plan proposed by China and Brazil as an alternative to Zelenskyy’s proposal. Zelenskyy warned of intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which could leave the country vulnerable during the upcoming winter months. He also raised concerns about potential Russian attacks on Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, which could have devastating effects beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Zelenskyy is set to meet with US President Joe Biden to seek support for his “victory plan”, which includes concrete steps by strategic partners. He will also push for authorization to use US-supplied ballistic missiles deeper inside Russian territory to aid in the conflict. Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, and members of Congress during his visit to Washington.
In his UN address, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s desire to end the war and called for solidarity from the international community. The situation in Ukraine remains tense as Russian forces continue to make advances in the eastern regions despite Ukrainian resistance.
