On social media, Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., called Haiti the “nastiest country in the western hemisphere” and said migrants from Haiti should “get their ass out of our country.” His comments were in response to a Haitian nonprofit filing charges against former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance for baseless claims about migrants. Higgins’ post, which was deleted, also amplified false claims about Haitians eating pets. The attorney representing the nonprofit said the post was a clear threat, and called for an Ethics Committee investigation. Another congressman moved to censure Higgins on the House floor, but the motion was found to be out of order. Most Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, are in the country legally under temporary protected status, but Trump and Vance have vowed to end this protection if elected. Higgins is known for using heated rhetoric, including advocating for killing suspected Islamic terrorists and physically removing an activist from a news conference. He has also been a staunch ally of Trump, known for controversial statements. The Republican leadership has not taken action on Higgins’ comments, despite calls for censure or expulsion.
