Hurricane warnings were issued for Florida’s Gulf Coast and the Yucatan Peninsula ahead of Tropical Storm Helene’s expected landfall as a major hurricane. In Florida, warnings are in effect from Mexico Beach to the Anclote River. The storm is forecasted to become a hurricane on Wednesday and a major storm by Thursday as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico. Helene’s storm surge is expected to raise water levels in Tampa Bay by up to 8 feet and other areas could see levels rise anywhere from 3 to 15 feet. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 8 inches in the southeastern United States. Due to Helene’s large size, the storm’s hazards are likely to affect a wide area. Officials in Mexico have also issued hurricane warnings for a large portion of the Yucatan Peninsula.
