A hurricane watch and storm surge warnings have been issued for almost all of Florida’s western coastline as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine moves towards the Gulf Coast. The storm is forecasted to strengthen into a hurricane and authorities are urging people to prepare and exercise caution. The storm is currently located west of Grand Cayman with sustained winds of 35 mph and is expected to move northwest. Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued for the entire western coast of Florida, with storm surge warnings in place as well. The storm is forecasted to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 61 counties and urged residents to prepare for a possible Category 4 hurricane. Factors contributing to the increased hurricane activity include warmer sea surface temperatures and weaker wind shear. Record warm waters from human-caused climate change are fueling the intensification of the storm. If Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine becomes a hurricane, it will be the fifth hurricane to hit Florida in three years. Residents are advised to fill gas tanks, stock up on supplies, clean up yards, and be familiar with evacuation zones. Emergency response teams are on standby to assist with power restoration, search and rescue, and evacuations.
