Cathay Pacific Airways recently banned a couple for harassing a mainland Chinese woman who refused to put up her reclined seat on a flight from Hong Kong to London. The woman, identified as Jin Yuelin, shared a video on a social media platform showing the altercation with the couple. The couple used discriminatory language towards her and kicked her seat after she declined to adjust it for them. Other passengers on the flight criticized the couple’s behavior and the woman was eventually offered a new seat after the crew’s intervention.
Cathay Pacific issued an apology for the incident and stated that the couple involved would be banned from all future flights. The woman later posted a follow-up video expressing gratitude for the support she received from friends both on the plane and online. She emphasized that the incident was isolated and should not be overgeneralized.
The incident highlighted tensions between residents of mainland China and Hong Kong, as the former British colony has seen increased Chinese influence in recent years. Hong Kong’s handover to China in 1997 has led to political and social changes, including the implementation of the National Security Law by Beijing. Despite these challenges, the woman expressed appreciation for the support she received from both Hong Kong and mainland Chinese individuals.
