In a recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution, 124 countries called for Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory within a year. The resolution cited a ruling from the International Court of Justice that declared Israel’s occupation and settlements on Palestinian land as illegal. Despite this, 54 countries did not support the resolution, highlighting a lack of moral courage and adherence to international law.
The vote came amidst ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza and the West Bank, resulting in thousands of Palestinian deaths and injuries. The US, a long-time supporter of Israel, voted against the resolution despite a US representative at the ICJ voting in favor of similar opinions. This inconsistency in US policy on occupations raises concerns about double standards and complicity in war crimes.
Other countries like the UK, Germany, and various US and NATO allies also either voted against or abstained from supporting the resolution, prioritizing geopolitical considerations over international law and ethics. This hypocrisy in global alliances undermines the legitimacy of international law and sets a dangerous precedent where powerful nations can act with impunity.
To restore faith in international law, countries must prioritize human rights over strategic interests and hold each other accountable for violations. Consistent and unbiased adherence to international law is essential to prevent further erosion of global order and ensure justice and accountability for all. Failure to address these issues could lead to a lawless future marked by violence and oppression.
