Texas pair sent to jail following pit bulls’ fatal attack on 81-year-old man

A Texas couple was sentenced to more than a decade in prison each after their pit bulls got loose and killed an 81-year-old man near their San Antonio home. Christian Moreno received 18 years in prison, and Abilene Schnieder received 15 years. Ramon Najera was killed in the attack, and his wife, Juanita Najera, was injured. Firefighters had to use pickaxes to fend off the dogs during the attack. The dogs involved in the incident were euthanized, and the couple was found criminally negligent for not providing adequate fencing for their animals. Juanita Najera expressed her trauma in court, stating that she now suffers from PTSD and extreme loneliness. The couple pleaded guilty to the attack resulting in death. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales called the incident preventable and emphasized the importance of responsible dog ownership. Moreno and Schnieder are prohibited from owning or possessing dogs if paroled. The judge spoke about the need for taking care of dogs and ensuring the safety of the community in sentencing the couple. Attorneys representing Moreno and Schnieder did not provide a comment after the sentencing.
