Hezbollah is reeling from an Israeli airstrike that killed two senior figures and dozens of others in a densely populated suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. The strike killed Ibrahim Akil and Ahmed Wahbi, members of Hezbollah’s elite forces. The attack left at least 31 people dead, including three children, and 68 injured. Iran, which supports Hezbollah, condemned the strike and warned that the region is on the brink of war. The strike followed the coordinated detonation of pagers and walkie-talkies belonging to Hezbollah members across Lebanon, an act believed to be carried out by Israel.
The escalating tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups have raised fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East. Iran showcased its military arsenal at a parade in Tehran, including a new self-detonating drone. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticized Israel for its actions, calling them “crimes against children”. A senior officer in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that the region is on the brink of war, suggesting that Israel’s actions could provoke conflict in other countries as well.
The situation has intensified concerns about a potential all-out war in the region, as Hezbollah and Iran retaliate against Israel. The airstrike and subsequent events have further strained the already tense relations between the parties involved, with the threat of wider conflict looming.
