The attempt to recall Republican Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos from office faced a legal setback as the state Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal to revive the effort. Supporters of former President Donald Trump had led the recall effort, targeting Vos for his refusal to decertify President Joe Biden’s narrow win in the state. The recall petition was rejected by the Wisconsin Elections Commission and a lower court ruled that the signatures were collected under invalid legislative boundary lines. Vos, the longest-serving Assembly speaker in Wisconsin history, faced backlash from Trump supporters for not supporting efforts to impeach the state’s top elections official. Despite the legal hurdles, Vos won his primary in August and is set to face Democrat Alan Kupsik in the upcoming election. The winner will serve a two-year term starting in January. It remains unclear when any potential recall election would be held if the recall organizers were to prevail in court. Attorneys for both sides did not immediately provide comment on the Supreme Court’s decision.
