Brazilian Government Reports Deforestation in Amazon Rainforest at Record Low Levels Since 2016

The Amazon rainforest, which covers an area twice the size of India and lies mostly within Brazil, plays a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and maintaining climate balance. It also holds 20% of the world’s fresh water and a vast array of biodiversity, including 16,000 tree species. However, deforestation in Brazil’s Cerrado savannah is increasing, with soybean production as a major contributor. The Cerrado is highly biodiverse but lacks protected status compared to the Amazon.

Efforts to control deforestation include monitoring and law enforcement, but more needs to be done. New protected areas are needed, both within and outside Indigenous territory, and greater transparency is required in tracking the origins of cattle raised for beef production. Replanting degraded pasture lands as forests and implementing stricter rules for the financial sector are also essential in preventing deforestation.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Marina Silva acknowledges that law enforcement alone is not enough to combat deforestation. The government plans to support sustainable productive activities as part of a broader strategy. By combining continued law enforcement with sustainable practices, Brazil aims to address deforestation and protect its valuable ecosystems.
