Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been chosen to lead the country’s interim government following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The announcement was made by President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s press secretary, Joynal Abedin. The rest of the members of the interim government will be determined after discussions with political parties and other stakeholders. The decision to appoint Yunus was reached after a meeting with student protest leaders, military division heads, civil society members, and business leaders. Yunus had been proposed by the students who were leading the movement against Hasina’s rule, and reports suggest he has agreed to take on the role. Yunus is expected to return to Bangladesh from Paris in the near future. Student leaders, who were part of the meeting with the president, left satisfied with the decision to appoint Yunus.
