Jimmy Lai, a Hong Kong media tycoon, to take the stand in his own defense

Prominent publisher Jimmy Lai is facing a national security trial in Hong Kong under a Beijing-imposed law that aims to stamp out dissent. Lai, the 76-year-old founder of Apple Daily newspaper, was arrested in 2020 during a crackdown on pro-democracy protests and charged with colluding with foreign forces and producing seditious publications. Despite his lawyer arguing that there was insufficient evidence against him, judges ruled that Lai must answer to all charges.

Lai plans to testify in his defense when the trial resumes on November 20. His case, which has been ongoing for over 90 days, is seen as a test for press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong. Since the enactment of the 2020 security law, civil liberties in the city, including freedom of the press, have significantly diminished. The law is said to have restored stability to the city following the 2019 protests.

Prosecutors allege that Lai sought foreign support, particularly from the U.S., in fighting for freedom and democracy in Hong Kong. Six former Apple Daily executives have already pleaded guilty to colluding with Lai and await sentencing. The prosecution’s witnesses have testified that Lai met with high-ranking U.S. officials to discuss sanctions against Beijing. Hong Kong, once known for its media freedom, now ranks 135th out of 180 countries in terms of press freedom.
